Hayden Lake’s Most Popular Event: 70.3 Ironman Triathalon
Located in northern Idaho, Hayden Lake offers pristine waters, fantastic beaches, and spectacular scenery. While many travelers flock to this destination year-round, one of the most popular times to visit is during the 70.3 Ironman Triathlon, held this year on June 26th, 2022.
Athletes from all over the world will travel to Coeur D’Alene, just a few minutes away from Hayden Lake, to challenge themselves physically and mentally amongst the beauty of northern Idaho’s stunning mountains and lakes.
What is a 70.3 Ironman Triathalon?
Also known as a Half Ironman, an Ironman 70.3 is a long-distance triathlon held by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The number “70.3” refers to the number of miles covered in this race. Participants will swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, and run 13.1 miles.
The first Half Ironman was held in the UK in 2001. Today, there are at least 89 of these events worldwide every year, with one of them taking place in Couer D’Alene, Idaho.
What to expect at Ironman in Hayden Lake
Participants will only have 8 hours and 30 minutes to complete Ironman, with 1 hour and 10 minutes within that time to complete the swimming portion. Athletes who take longer than 1 hour and 10 minutes to swim will not be able to complete the race.
Athletes will begin by swimming one lap in Lake Coeur D’Alene. This race has a rolling start, in which participants will enter the water continuously through a controlled access point. After swimming, participants will bike a hilly track around the lake, then run two laps around the running course, which features many rolling hills.
The course will have aid stations with drinks and snacks, including energy drinks, water, fruit, and energy bars. With an average air temperature of 75 degrees and a water temperature of 68 degrees, the weather in Coeur D’Alene is ideal for the Ironman.
